PORTSMOUTH-Some Portsmouth residents say they don’t want a rehab clinic for meth addicts near their homes.
It would be set up across the street from I.C. Norcom High School on an empty lot in front of a home at 600 Yorktown Avenue.
Councilman Bill Moody said several people complained to City Council earlier this week.
“They already have a problem with prostitution and break-ins in that area. Families think this center will make the problem even worse,” he said.
“If it’s harmful to the community, my stance is it shouldn’t be there,” Moody said.
Moody said he asked the city manager and staff to update council on the project and to explain why the particular location was chosen.
“The city shouldn’t support anything that will cause problems for residents. I think you need to be careful where you place a methadone clinic.”
The plan is in the early stages and City Council would have to approve the measure for the center to be built.
