Portsmouth offering safe rides for partygoers

PORTSMOUTH-- The city of Portsmouth is offering a free service for those who may have had too much to drink on New Year's Eve.

The Safe Ride Program is arranged by the Sheriff's Department to help drivers get free rides home or to local hotels on December 31st. The city will be using vans to transport people from 10 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.

Partygoers can call (757) 393-5030 on New Year's Eve to take advantage of this program. Pick-ups are only available in Portsmouth.

However, if you are outside the city of Portmouth, AAA is assisting people all over the area including Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Yorktown and Williamsburg.

Drivers can call (757) 631-1700 until 6 a.m. on January 1st.
