POQUOSON – As their 13-year old son recovers from a broken pelvis, a Poquoson couple is urging city council to implement stricter safety measures at a particular intersection.

Eighth grade student Lincoln Livingston was hit by a car near Poquoson Avenue and Little Florida Road earlier this month as he walked to school.

The driver was not charged.  It was considered an accident.

“I decided to cross the street between a line of cars and a car that stopped,” explained Livingston. “I didn't feel the car. I felt the pain afterwards, when I came to.”

He is still feeling pain as he tries to walk on crutches.  His mother Patty says she doesn’t want this to happen again to anyone else.

Patty and her husband are trying to get the city to increase safety measures at that intersection which she says is a bit unusual.

“The cars that are coming are not slowing down until almost at the school. The sign needs to be moved further  down so you can be aware,” said Livingston.

13News has learned that discussions began two months ago about making changes to the intersection.  But police chief Cliff Bowen says this accident is motivation to get something done sooner.  Bowen says he will meet with the city engineer and the city manager next week to talk about how to make the intersection safer.

Among the measures being discussed: extending the 25 mile per hour speed limit in a school zone and creating a path to guide students and pedestrians to a clearly visible crosswalk.

There have been 12 accidents at the intersection of Poquoson Avenue and Little Florida Road in the last year.
