WILLIAMSBURG -- A Williamsburg woman told 13News Now she witnessed a horrible crime.
The woman, who does not what to be identified, said that on Tuesday she was talking to a friend on her front porch at the intersection of Hubbard and Hillside lanes when they noticed a man in a navy blue vehicle place an 8-week-old pit bull puppy out on the street.
“My friend starts screaming 'no, no, stop! Oh my goodness what are you doing?'" the woman said.
The woman said the man then returned to his vehicle and ran over the puppy. “The puppy was just twitching, it was in pain, it was dying and really quickly went into shock,” the woman said.
Investigators are now looking for the suspect.
"In my 23 years in law enforcement I've never seen somebody do this; cut a dog loose on a busy road like that. It's not the busiest road in Williamsburg, but it's busy. I don't get it!" said Lt. Dennis Ivey with the York County-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
He said there are plenty of humane options available to those looking to get rid of unwanted pets.
“In my mind I'm thinking, 'if you can do this to an animal what kind of person are you?'” Lt. Ivey added.
