NEWPORT NEWS -- A 31-year-old Michigan woman who accepted a ride from a stranger while waiting for a bus in Virginia Beach was then raped and robbed, police told 13News Now.
Police said the woman was waiting for an HRT bus on Holland Road around 11 p.m. on April 16.
The woman told police a man offered her a ride and she accepted. He drove her to the Amtrak station in Newport News and demanded sexual favors. When she refused, he allegedly pulled a knife, raped her, stole her money and left her there.
Someone passing by stopped and helped the woman around 2:30 a.m.
The man is in his late 20s or early 30s and has the number 13 in roman numerals tattooed on his neck, police said. He was driving a dark green, two-door car with Carolina license plates.
News of the rape frightened women who live and work in the area.
"…keep your guard up. If you’re a female, always keep your guard up.” resident Antoinette Santos said.
Some fear it could happen again.
“I usually give people rides and stuff, it’s going to make me tighten down a little bit on giving people rides,” Janay Cooke said.
