NEWPORT NEWS - A man was set up to be robbed and then he was beaten until he lost consciousness, Newport News Police say.
The 48-year-old was with Leslie Denise Gilliam at his self-storage unit Monday night when Eric Frederick Edwards arrived, pulled a gun, demanded money, then attacked, officers state. They forced him into his van and continued the beating until they got to an ATM and withdrew money from his account, says police spokeswoman Holly McPherson.
Gilliam and Edwards then returned the storage facility and left him in his van.
"When he regained consciousness, he walked to a Shell gas station on Jefferson Ave. and people there called police for him," McPherson stated.
The victim was treated for a black eye and numerous cuts and abrasions on his face and head.
McPherson said the three people involved know each other and that the victim and Gilliam have known each other for several years.
Gilliam, 34, and Edwards, 22, are charged with robbery, abduction, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and four counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.
