DARE COUNTY, NC - Hatteras Island is off limits to visitors as recovery from Hurricane Sandy continues, but those who are there are allowed leave.
Highway 12 on the Island, north of Rodanthe, remained closed Wednesday as crews worked to clear the road of sand and debris. The road is clear between all the villages on the island, officials stated.
Officials said a state highway department assessment indicates NC-12 from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe will open by Thanksgiving.
Electrical service, cell phone and Internet service has been restored to all Hatteras Island Villages.
The emergency ferry service from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe will operate with restricted entry:
Departing Stumpy Point at 6 a.m., 8, 10, noon, 2 p.m., 4 and 10
Departing Rodanthe at 7 a.m., 9, 11, 1 p.m., 3, 5 and 7.
Elsewhere, highway department crews have inspected the top part of the Bonner Bridge and examined the water depth around the support columns. For now, it remains closed until NC-12 on Pea Island can be restored.
Highway 158 in Kitty Hawk has one lane open in each direction.
