ONANCOCK - Someone set fire to an old restaurant on the Eastern Shore.

Mallards Restaurant at Bayside and Deep Creek roads went up in flames around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Battalion Chief Charles Pruitt said crews found smoke and flames coming from the back of the building.  Firefighters tried to fight the fire from inside, but the heat was too intense, he said.

Chief Pruitt says the restaurant had been closed for several years and that neighbors reported someone had been living in the building until about three weeks ago.

The fire was extinguished, but a few hot spots flared up around 4:30 a.m.

This is the 67th suspicious fire in Accomack County since mid-November. Anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible can get a $25,000.00 reward. Tips by text, email or phone can be sent to 757-665-1437.

On Tuesday, an arsonist set fire to the vacant Whispering Pines Motel in Tasley. The motel was destroyed.
