NORFOLK-- An Old Dominion University student is charged with conspiring to commit acts of terrorism.
Police say 20-year-old Tyler Bergeron of Herndon told his roommate that he was "gonna start shooting" people "at school on the Internet," according to a search warrant obtained by the Virginian-Pilot.
ODU officials told 13News the investigation began in late March when the roommate reported the conversation.
When the comment was made, police descended very quickly and detained him, spokesman Jennifer Mullen Collins said.
He was charged April 10 .
During a court hearing last week, the Pilot reports Bergeron's attorney said his client had been diagnosed with a mental illness and had stopped taking his medications. According to the attorney, Bergeron never had a gun and posed no serious threat to anyone.
The judge imposed a $50,000 bond and said Bergeron had to submit to drug testing and take his prescribed medicine. He's now living with his parents. Bergeron also was banned from the ODU campus and cannot own any firearms.
Bergeron was in his second year at ODU and was studying communications, but ODU says he's no longer enrolled.
If convicted, Bergeron faces a sentence of 20 years to life.
