RICHMOND -- Participants of Virginia's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, commonly referred to as welfare, will no longer be able to buy lottery tickets, alcohol or tobacco products from electronic transactions.

Effective July 1, people using TANF cards will also not be able to purchase sexually explicit material, or use the card in places in which wagering or gaming, such as bingo, is conducted.

The Virginia Department of Social Services announced the legislation approved by the General Assembly this year.

Enforcing the new regulation will require the Commonwealth to create a policy for store owners to follow, which must be in place by February.
