NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- A Newport News woman has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for lying to a federal grand jury during a double-murder investigation.
Federal prosecutors said Monday that 30-year-old Bettina Bugg pleaded guilty in July. She was sentenced Friday.
According to court documents, the father of one of Bugg's children was a suspect in the murders. Bugg lied under oath and asked a government witness to also lie.
U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride says Bugg "made a mockery of the grand jury system," and the tough sentence sends a clear warning about the consequences of lying to a federal grand jury.
