NEWPORT NEWS -- Runners start training now. A new marathon is coming to Hampton Roads.

Newport News announced Monday that the inaugural "One City Marathon" will take place March 15, 2015.

The marathon will run the entire 26-mile length of the city with Newport News Park as the setting for the start of the race while the Victory Arch in downtown will serve as the finish line.

"The length of the city being so long its difficult for people to feel connected and we're hoping this is going to be a part of this feeling like one city," said Newport News Mayor McKinley Price.

The event is designed to bring people together with a focus on wellness. To get residents ready, between now and the race, the city will offer free training and healthy living seminars.

City Manager James Bourey says the marathon will also give the city national exposure.

The course of the marathon will be certified, which means it can serve as a qualifer for the Boston marathon.
