NEWPORT NEWS - You can visit, but Newport News is considering banning people from living in hotels and motels.

City Council on Tuesday will consider banning people from living in such establishments longer than 30 days in a 60 day period. The ordinance would also make it illegal for motel and hotel owners to rent rooms for people to live in for extended periods of time.

The city is trying to prevent families from living in substandard conditions.

Some of establishments that have attracted long term residents have also been the locations of numerous police raids cracking down on prostitution and drug activity.
