NORFOLK -- A new $6 million visitor center will enhance visitors' experiences when they tour the MacArthur Memorial.

The dedication ceremony and opening festivities are Oct. 13-14 in downtown Norfolk.  Events include the unveiling of new exhibits, book signings, a special concert and the premiere of "The MacArthur Story," a new high-definition video tribute to the life and service of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur.

The new 16,000-square foot visitors center next to the Memorial at MacArthur Square features a high definition movie theater, rotating exhibit gallery, a visitor’s lounge and a gift shop.

Opening exhibits include large artifacts such as Willy’s Jeep and a Harley Davidson motorcycle from World War II, and the general’s iconic 1950 Chrysler Limousine.

There also are nine mounted glass panels which provide a pictorial walk-through history of Arthur and Douglas MacArthur’s military service from the Civil War era to the Korean War.

“The goal of the memorial is to preserve and present the legacy of the men and women who have served our great country,” says Colonel William Davis USMC (Retired), Executive Director of the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation.

Official say more than 50,000 people each year tour and visit the library, archive, exhibits in the building that serves as General's and Mrs. MacArthur’s final resting place.
