HAMPTON-- The man replacing former Hampton Police Chief Chuck Jordan says he finds himself in a somewhat awkward situation.

Thomas Townsend has been named the interim police chief, replacing Chuck Jordan,  who resigned yesterday after an internal investigation.

Townsend has been the chief before and has been in charge since Jordan was placed on leave in October.

But with Jordan resigning yesterday, Townsend says,  "It's always an unusal situation to come into a position as interim. I've done it before in two different positions but this is my home, this is where I grew up.  I spent 30 years in this organization and it's like coming home."

Jordan found himself under scrutiny a short time ago with the way in which an undercover a cigarette operation was funded.  That operation is now being investigated.

In his resignation letter, Jordan stated City Hall's support for the police department has waned and he specifically called out Hampton's City Attorney's office and City Manager's office.

City Manager Mary Bunting responded, "Those are his words and I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment on his words.   He's obviously been through a lot and he has the right to make whatever words he wants. I think I have done everything I can to be fair and objective to all employees."
