VIRGINIA BEACH -- Construction on a new Entry Control Point for Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex on Dam Neck Road was set to begin Friday.

Throughout the year-long construction period, traffic approaching the ECP is expected to be heavier than normal, especially in the morning rush hour.

A woman decided to ride her bicycle to work Friday. She said it takes her about 15 minutes to get to the base that way, but it's better than waiting for an hour in her car.

The $18.5 million contract includes the construction of a new military working dog kennel, a Navy Special Warfare Development Group visitor center, improved perimeter security and the main ECP upgrade.

The Commanding Officer has mandated that all commercial vehicle traffic be inspected at the NAS Oceana inspection station on Tomcat Blvd. prior to heading to Dam Neck Annex.

Some ways to help mitigate potential traffic headaches include carpooling, bicycling and adjusting work hours.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic awarded the contract  to Tetra Tech Tesoro, Inc. in September 2012.
