DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper is recovering after being shot during a traffic stop in Durham.
The patrol said Tuesday that 42-year-old Trooper Michael Potts is hospitalized in fair condition. Potts was shot during a traffic stop Monday.
Patrol Sgt. Maurice Devalle told The Herald-Sun of Durham that Potts had surgery at Duke University Hospital after being hit by several bullets. Devalle says the 11-year veteran stopped a car around 6 p.m. Monday because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
Officers continued to search for the suspect on Tuesday. A car that appeared to be the suspect's vehicle was found abandoned behind a restaurant.
