CHESAPEAKE-- A North Carolina man faces two potential life sentences in the fatal shootings of two people.
45-year-old Charles Collins of Pollocksville, N.C. pleaded guilty on Friday in Chesapeake Circuit Court to two first-degree murder counts, four abduction counts and several weapons charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced on January 28, 2013.
Deputy Public Defender A. Robinson Winn says his client accepted a plea agreement to avoid the death penalty.
Prosecutors say Collins fatally shot his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend, 40-year-old Michael Temple of Elizabeth City, N.C., and her son, 19-year-old Derwin Watts II of Chesapeake, on April 22.
A police SWAT team shot and wounded Collins during a standoff.
