NORFOLK-- More than 200 local high school students were awarded extra money to use for college Thursday.

At a luncheon at the Virginia Beach Convention Center,  the Norfolk-based Access College Foundation awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to local high school students.

The average award was $1,250 dollars per year, renewable annually for a total of $5,000.

Access advisers are in every south Hampton Roads high school and some middle schools where they serve as go-to guides for students who are applying for college financial aid.

According to Director of Development Gina Madden, since the foundation was founded in 1988, it has helped almost 45,000 students obtain $375 million in financial aid and scholarships.
