HAMPTON -- Police are looking for the person responsible for the death of a man, after officers found his body inside a home in the 600 block of Newport News Avenue Saturday morning.
Someone along Dogwood Street flagged down police at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. The person told them about a shooting near Newport News Avenue and Shell Road.
Officers found the victim dead inside a house. Someone shot him in the upper part of his body.
Margaret Eaddy told 13News Now the person killed was her son, 28-year-old Jonathan Coles.
“They shot and killed him as he was coming out of the door," Eaddy explained. "The assailant was already waiting for him.”
Eaddy went to the home after finding out about her son's death. She gathered there with several people Saturday evening, remembering Coles with a vigil.
“To me, if you can walk around and kill somebody, then that means to me that you’re possessed, you know, you don’t have any good in life. I mean guns is not the answer to every problem," Eaddy said.
Police have not released any details about possible suspects or a motive in the shooting.
