PORTSMOUTH -- A Portsmouth man has been charged  in the 2011 stabbing death of Gloria Johnson and faces similar charges in the murder of his neighbor, Linda Carroll.

On Thursday, a Grand Jury charged 57-year-old Bruce Williams with first degree murder in Johnson's death.

According to Portsmouth Police Spokeswoman Jan Clark, the 47-year-old woman was found stabbed to death on Wilcox Avenue on March 6, 2011.

Also in 2011, Williams was charged with first degree murder in the stabbing death of Linda Carroll.

Detectives and SWAT officers searched Williams' apartment at 817 Madison Street in 2011 and found evidence linking him to the death of Carroll, said police spokeswoman Det. Jan Westerbeck.

Carroll, 64, who lived in the same complex, died from multiple stab wounds.

Her neighbor went into her apartment to check on her and found her body.

Williams lived on the second floor and Carroll lived on the fourth floor, Westerbeck told WVEC.com.

Police said Carroll and Johnson had the same circle of friends and both worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Williams is currently in custody.
