FRANKLIN -- For the first time ever, the Franklin Fire and Rescue Department is struggling to recruit and retain volunteers.

The department has depended on workers from International paper to fill day shifts.

"6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. are critical hours," says Chief Vince Holt.  "Now that the mill is closed, many of our volunteers have either moved, gotten jobs an hour away or looking for work."

The department has four career firefighters who work 24-hour shifts and they too are feeling the strain of low volunteer staffing.

There are no residency restrictions when it comes to voluteering.  You can learn more on the department's Website.
