FORT LEE - A man and his two-year-old daughter died when fire swept through their home on Fort Lee near Petersburg on Monday.
The Army says the fire that killed 24-year-old Sgt. Corey Flowers and daughter Kourtney began in the first-floor kitchen. Fort Lee Fire Chief Tom Bahr said an open frying pan and cooking oil left unattended on the stove caused the fire.
Investigators determined that the smoke detectors in that unit activated, officials told WVEC.com.
Sgt. Flowers, a native of Raeford, N.C., was a mortuary affairs specialist with the 54th Quartermaster Company. He joined the Army in 2006.
His wife, Spc. Pauletta Flowers, wasn't home at the time, Fort Lee officials stated.
