12/6 UPDATE: Investigators say the fire was accidental due to unattended cooking.

12/5 UPDATE: Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire. They say fire damaged the kitchen, dining room and family room and there was smoke damage throughout the home.

HAMPTON -- A family of five was displaced when their Hampton home was damaged in a fire Wednesday evening.

Crews responded to the 3800 block of Shell Road around 6:00 p.m.

Smoke and flames could be seen coming from two sides of the home when crews arrived.  It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the flames.

Officials said a rabbit and two lizards died in the blaze.  A dog and rabbit survived.

A young adult was the only person home when the fire started. 

The Red Cross is helping three adults and two children with food and lodging.

No injuries were reported.
