KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - Fire swept through a condo building on the Outer Banks Thursday night.
The three-story, 20-unit building on Virginia Dare Trail went up in flames. At its height, flames shot up about 75-feet in the air.
Crews were at the scene most of night making sure it didn't spread to nearby buildings and on Friday they continued to put out hot spots.
"This thing could have kept running. It could have went down the beach and got a couple more cottages on fire. It could of went across the street and had a couple of fires down here we had embers on some of the roofs," said Fire Chief Troy Tilley.
He said many of the units weren't occupied because it's off season. Three people who were there escaped and are staying with friends or family, Tilley stated.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for minor injures but was treated and released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
