NORFOLK -- A 2-alarm fire damaged the attached garage of a Norfolk home.
Crews were called to the 3800 block of Dare Circle in the Norview section around 5:00 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming from the garage.
Capt. Mike Hicks told WVEC.com the homeowners were asleep but woke when they smelled smoked.
Danny Ginn said he woke up to the taste of smoke in his mouth. As he walked towards the back of his house, the smoke got so thick that he had trouble breathing. He headed out the front door and that's when he saw flames coming out of his garage.
The couple got out safely.
The fire didn't spread into the main house, but there is smoke damage inside, said Hicks, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Ginn says he's grateful that firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading. He and his wife have lived in the Cape Cod-style home for 15 years and had lived across the street for 20 years before that, according to Capt. Hicks.
Roads in a one-block area around the fire scene were blocked for about 90 minutes because water lines had been laid down across the street.
Investigators determined the fire was an accident caused by an electrical malfunction in the garage.
Capt. Hicks added that the home didn't have working smoke detectors.
Norfolk, like most localities, has a program to give residents a free smoke detector. Call 664-6616 or 823-4324 to schedule installation by personnel from the fire station closest to you.
