NORFOLK--To protest oil drilling, thousands lined up along area beaches, locking hands to draw a human line in the sand.

Hampton Roads was the site of three such protests at different beaches around town, including Buckroe, Oceanview, Virginia Beach, and Sandbridge.

Environmentalists say they want to keep the beaches free from the risks of offshore drilling.

They want to raise awareness for safer and cleaner energy.

Saturday's "Hands Across the Sand" was a national event hundreds of beaches across the country saw people locking hands in the sand.
