TAPPAHANNOCK (AP) -- A Virginia State Police trooper and a highway work zone worker are recovering from injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Essex County.

Officials say a 1995 GMC pickup truck ran off Route 17 in Tappahannock on Sunday night, went over a curb and struck Senior Trooper J.D. Stamper and a highway engineer.

Stamper, the engineer and another individual were standing together outside their vehicles off the right side of the road.

Stamper was treated for minor injuries and released. The engineer was flown to VCU Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

Police say the driver of the pickup truck, 20-year-old Robert P. Jenkins II of Dunnsville, has been charged with reckless driving.

Additional charges are pending and an investigation of the crash is ongoing.
