VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach police officer has been released from the hospital after his police car was struck Friday night.
During a traffic stop, the officer pulled over a car at 10:40 p.m. on I-264 near the Lynnhaven exit. Police say a driver also traveling east hit the front driver side of the police car, ripping off the front bumper. The driver's vehicle was overturned and flying debris hit the officer.
The suspect, 27 year old John Paul Kotara, has been charged with driving under the influence and failing to move over for a stationary emergency vehicle. Kotara was taken to a hospital and then transported to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.
The police officer’s identity has not been released, but officials say he has been with the department since 2007.
