Rt. 258 in Isle of Wight County reopens after deadly crash

10:45 a.m. UPDATE: 1991 Nissan pickup truck driven by Martin Johnson of Carrsville was going north on Route 258 when it crossed over the solid lines and hit a 2012 Kenworth tractor trailer head on.
Johnson was wearing his safety belt but died upon impact, Va. State Police said.
Tractor-trailer driver, Howard Blackwell, Jr. of Smithfield, taken to Riverside Medical Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
His truck was carrying/loaded with grease and none spilled.  

8:50 a.m. UPDATE: The road has reopened.

8:29 a.m. UPDATE: A pickup truck and tractor trailer collided head-on around 4:30 a.m., Va. State Police said. Troopers are working to have the roadway open around 9 a.m.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY -- One person was killed in a head-on collision in Isle of Wight County. 

The crash involving a tanker truck happened around 4:45 a.m. on Route 258/Old Courthouse Highway near Vivian Drive. The road is closed in both directions and Va. State Police say it will be some time before it reopens.

Kim Spain Fyfe posted on the WVEC13 Facebook page, "Hatcher's Lane and Rt. 258 .. Tanker truck in field."

She told 13News Now "Fatal accidents have occurred too often on this small area of 258 in the past several years."

A crash reconstruction team has been called to assist in the investigation.

Traffic is being detoured onto Route 652/Harry Wilson Rd. onto Route 620/Broadwater Rd. and back onto Route 25/Old Courthouse Highway.
