DARE COUNTY-- The Bonner Bridge is the only road to Hatteras Island. Since it's closed until further notice, people will need to rely on a ferry from Stumpy Point which starts Friday.
One Alabama couple was hoping to vacation on Hatteras Island this week but now they'll have to take the ferry Friday morning.
"We knew they got a lot of rain here for about a three day period but we didn't know it was this much," said Candy Jones.
Parts of Beach Road in Kitty Hawk and Nags Head is still blocked due to sand and flooding, much like when Hurricane Isabel hit.
"Well it's similar, very similar because we filled up the basin between 158 and Beach Road and we had the damage along Highway 12. It's very similar," said Sandy Sanderson, the Emergency Management Director for Dare County.
Sanderson said food and medical needs will take priority on the ferry over visitors.
"There will be a priority that we will establish as those people come in and the line forms. We will pull them out and get them on the ferry to get them over there."
Officials say it could be Thanksgiving before the Bonner Bridge reopens.
