UPDATE: Plant Manager Brian Kellner says the company is assessing the root cause of the fire that started in a pellet processing system. He says he doesn't expect any major downtime or loss.

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY-Firefighters are on the scene of a fire at a wood pellet manufacturing plant in Courtland.

Crews were called to Enviva Pellets just before 3:00 a.m. and say they have the fire under control now.  Franklin fire crews and 3 units from Southampton Co. are working the fire.

No one was hurt; there's no word on how the fire started, said Capt. John Friis with the Franklin Fire and Rescue Department.

On the WVEC13 Facebook page, Brenda Boyce wrote, "Fire trucks went thru this morning around 3. The plant is about 2 miles from where I live."

It's a relatively new facility. Enviva broke ground on the plant in July 2012 and it opened last year. Enviva spent about $91 million to build a wood pellet plant that created 72 jobs, according to a press release from that event.
