GLOUCESTER -- A sailor participating in the annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race has died.
His name name has not been released, but race officials say he was a part of the crew on the Cuchulain, a 50 foot schooner that is based out of Maryland.
The crew member fell overboard on Friday afternoon and was recovered from the water. The Coast Guard transported him to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race started on October 7th in Baltimore, Maryland and ends on October 14th in the Chesapeake Bay in Portsmouth, Virginia.
The race helps support children's education programs of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
