HAMPTON – A special election is being held for Virginia’s 91st House District which serves residents of Hampton, Poquoson, and York County.
The race comes after Republican Tom Gear stepped down in December.
On Tuesday, Republicans will choose between four candidates: Gordon Helsel, Chad Green, Chris Stuart, and Teresa Vanasse Schmidt.
There is controversy, though, surrounding Stuart. It has to do with where he lives.
Stuart’s campaign fliers say he’s been a resident of the Peninsula for more than 20 years. But outgoing state delegate Gear questions whether Stuart actually lives in the 91st District.
“I am not saying he has not been a resident of the Peninsula. What I’m saying is the other night, he was asked that question- where have you slept for the last three nights, and he said he could not recall,” stated Gear. “I don’t know how many people have that problem.”
13News caught up with Stuart as he canvassed the neighborhoods just a day before the special election. When asked if he lives in the district he wishes to serve, Stuart answered, “I am a registered voter of the 91st and a legal resident.”
Stuart added that the address he put on his certificate for candidacy was Seven Riding Path.
He added, “The facts are I have been a resident for 25 years. I went to high school here, raised a family, grew a business here, and the only home I have ever purchased is in the 91st District.”
13News checked the address.
A woman who came to the door confirmed that Stuart does live there, but she would not comment further.
On Tuesday, Republicans will hold a party canvas to determine who will run in the March 8 election. Polls will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Hampton, Poquoson, and Yorktown.
