NORFOLK -– Family and friends celebrated the life of Mark Rodriguez during a memorial service Wednesday afternoon.
Rodriguez, 17, was shot and killed in his vehicle by James Brown last Friday. Two police officers responding to that incident were shot by Brown. Officer Brian Jones, 35, died from his injuries.
Rodriguez, who was a rising senior at Norfolk Christian Schools, had just dropped off a friend following graduation ceremonies when he was killed.
During the memorial service Wednesday, Mark's mother, Leigh Ann, said her son was careful and kind and didn't ever want to hurt anybody.
She thanked all the officers that were in attendance and those who responded to the scene last Friday.
"Thanks to Officer Jones who gave his life responding to the call about our son," she said.
"He was so looking forward to heaven and that is what Mark would want people to focus on and that's where he is right now. He is with Jesus," school spokeswoman Janita Smith told 13News Now.
In April, Mark blogged about Heaven, saying, "God is super good. I can’t wait to be with him forever."
