VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Coast Guard has implemented "Operation Right Speed" to remind larger vessels to slow down this time of year for Right whales.

From now until April 2013, the guidelines will remain in place to help ensure that migratory mammals have a safe passage along the Atlantic seaboard.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, vessels 65 feet or greater must operate at 10 knots or less in areas where Right whales are known to migrate.

Globally, Right whales are among the most threatened of all the whales with a population estimated in the hundreds.
