HAMPTON ROADS -- Cities across the country are beefing up security for July 4th Independence Day celebrations.
Officials say it will be the bigest increase in protection for the public since the Boston Marathon Bombings in April.
In Hampton Roads, the Virginia State Police will be out in full force looking for dangerous drivers.
Thursday through Sunday, troopers will increase their patrols as part of the annual "Operation Care," a national traffic enforcement effort.
The additional patrols are aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities, and injuries caused by speeding, impaired driving and failure to use seat belts.
In Boston, the National Guard will set up security checkpoints; in Los Angeles, Police are stepping up their visibility and law enforcement; Washington D.C. is also on high alert near government buildings and public transit.
Police will also be out in Hampton Roads neighborhoods, checking for people setting off fireworks.
