NEWPORT NEWS -- Police have charged two people after a 6-year-old was shot in the foot just after midnight on New Year's Day.
Police charged 21-year-old Dametrey Ervon Boone, the victim's brother, with reckless handling of a firearm and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police also charged the child's mother, 41-year-old Giselle Owens, with filing a false police report and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
According to Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston, the child was shot at a home in the 1100 block of 27th Street around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 and taken by medics to the hospital.
Thurston said Owens told officers and 911 dispatchers the child was outside when he was struck by “stray gunfire.”
Police believe Boone accidentally shot his younger brother inside the home and then left the scene before police arrived.
Boone was arrested at the Newport News City Jail on Jan. 8 where he was being held on unrelated charges.
Owens was arrested around 12:15 p.m. on Jan. 8, and was released on her recognizance by a magistrate.
