CHESAPEAKE-- If heaven were a place on earth, it would be a field for Susan Monroe.

"This is her place out here," asst. teacher Evon Sheppard said.

Monroe spent 13 years teaching physical education at Greenbrier Primary School.

"One of the best memories was always field day. Everyone was together. It was like a big family," student Kevin Thompson said.

That big family is in tears. Saturday night, Monroe passed away unexpectedly.

"Everyone was close. The only way we can deal with this is to come together."

And that's what they did, lighting candles and forming a circle with Monroe's husband of 34 years and two children.

Dozens of people lined up to share stories.

"I met Susan 19 years ago. When I met her, I had a terrible surgery. She got me through everything, " Sheppard said.

She was just one person, but she impacted to many lives. Monroe helped raise thousands for the American Heart Association and hosted after school fitness programs. She was promoted as Chesapeake's PE supervisor, but she gave it up to continue teaching.

"She loved kids. That's why she kept pushing and pushing."

She continues to push others, through her spirit. Monroe challenges people to leave behind a better world.

"These children and teachers will never forget," friend Karen Morgan said.

I am so sorry to hear this. My son LOVED her and will be so sad to hear it. She was always full of life and love for the students. She will be missed.
