VIRGINIA BEACH - Military veterans and their spouses looking for a job might just find one at Thursday's career fair in Va. Beach.
The "Hiring Our Heroes" event began at 11:00 a.m. at the Sandler Center at 201 Market Street and runs until 4:00 p.m.
About 500 people had been through the event by 1:00 p.m. to talk with representatives from companies and organizations like Shell, Military Sealift Command, MIL Corp., Joint IED Defeat Org., First Command Financial Planning, State Farm, The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and Siemens.
Hiring Our Heroes is a nationwide initiative to increase the hiring of veterans and military spouses by producing special career fair hiring events. The U.S. Chamber launched the Hiring Our Heroes initiative in March 2011.
It's aimed at veterans who already have civilian work experience, men and women who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, members of the National Guard and reserves, military spouses, and other military family members.
Officials say they expect about 100 people to land a job, based on the success of prior events.
