ISLE OF WIGHT— A 33-year-old man camping near the James River Bridge had to be rescued from rising water.

Anthony Gontarz was camping at Ragged Island in Isle of Wight County and called around 1:30 a.m. to say the water was getting high, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department crews searched by boat but couldn't get to him because of his location and bad weather. They contacted the Coast Guard and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. was able to get to him and pull him to safety.

The Coast Guard says Gontarz was in good condition as he was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News to be checked out.
