ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY - Authorities say a man who was shot and his body set on fire had been staying with a woman in Newport News in the day before his death.

They're trying to locate her as they investigate the murder of 21-year-old Torrey Lamont Anderson.

Anderson's body and a burning car were found around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, after someone reported fire in the field along Nike Park Road.

Investigators say there were two separate fires: one to destroy the car and one to burn the body.

"Pretty much everything in the car was destroyed completely," Capt. Rick Gaddis stated.

Anderson  had been living with his grandparents in Murfreesboro, NC and working in the sanitation department at Smithfield Foods.

"Everybody is  just in disbelief about his death at work," said Simone Tillman, who works at the plant.

James Richard is also a plant employee.  Although Richard didn't know Anderson, he was suprised by Anderson's death.

"It felt like I lost a family member because he worked Smithfield."

The Roanoke-Chowan News Herald reported Anderson was identified by fingerprint and that he'd been jailed twice since June 2011 for firearms possession, felony breaking and entering and larceny.

Anyone has information about this case should call the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office at (757) 357-2151 or Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
