HANOVER COUNTY- Hanover Fire & EMS is currently responding to an apparent explosion in a building on the 11000 block of South Washington Highway/Route 1.

Crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke billowing from a warehouse-type structure, which suffered significant damage.

According to Battalion Chief Jason Williams of Hanover Fire & EMS, one person has been injured and transported to VCU Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch re[prts Williams said the blast destroyed the front and rear walls and partially collapsed the roof of the approximately 10,000-square-foot building, which included garage bays for work vehicles.

The Fire Marshal says it could take days to determine the cause of the explosion, which occurred shortly before 4 a.m. on Dec. 18., and that the biggest concern is the structural integrity of the building.

Several vehicles also were struck by debris from the explosion.
