NEWPORT NEWS -- Police say a boy was severely injured while playing near a train Sunday afternoon.

10-year-old Jahmee Harris is from Hampton, but was visiting family in the area.

It happened in the 400 block of Bellwood near Tyler Avenue just before 2:00 p.m. Witnesses say Harris and several other children were playing near the tracks when a moving train passed through the area.

Police say the lower part of one of the boys legs was severed after he got caught underneath the train.

Turkessa Banks, the boy's aunt, says his nickname is "Juju."

He was taken to a local hospital and later transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and then to CHKD.

He is in fair condition, according to CHKD.

The boy is a student at Hunter B. Andrews PK-8 School in Hampton.

Newport News CSX is investigating the incident.
