NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News father has is facing child abuse charges after his 10-month-old baby suffered significant burns in a bathtub, officials said.
Police spokesman Lou Thurston said officers responded to a home in the 700 block of Antrim Drive on April 16 and observed significant burns on a 10-month-old girl’s legs, feet and buttocks.
Medics transported the girl to the hospital for treatment. She was later released and is currently in the custody of her mother.
An investigation found that the child’s injuries were the result of hot water in the bathtub, Thurston said.
The child’s father, 21-year-old Walter Clarence Blackman, was arrested at his home on May 9. He is charged with one count each of malicious assault and felony child abuse/neglect.
