Veteran worries about wife while suspect holds gun to his head: "What she going to do?"

HAMPTON -- Police charged six teenagers after they allegedly robbed and carjacked an elderly Hampton man on Monday.

According to police, a 70-year-old man was in his van in the 2500 block of Shell Road when he was approached by multiple suspects around 6:30 p.m. 

One of the teens displayed a firearm and ordered to the man out of his vehicle, police said.

"I got on the ground and said, 'Oh, I hope this guy don't shoot,'" he victim told 13News Now Tuesday.

The suspects allegedly took the man’s wallet and cash. 

"I had about $480.  I was getting ready to pay some bill," the victim said.  "Got to get some more money now."

According to police, the teens then fled the scene in the victim's vehicle.

The retired Air Force veteran says his wife was watching from the window and that's when his fear escalated. 

"I said if they kill me, what she going to do?"

About 20 minutes later police received a call from a concerned citizen who saw the suspects abandon the van in the 200 block of Raleigh Avenue.

The teens were arrested without incident.

The victims’ vehicle was returned to him and the wallet was found inside.  He did not receive any injuries as a result of the incident.  

The following individuals were arrested:

Taijalon Allen Smith: 18-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 600 block of Aqua Vista Drive. He has been arrested and charged with one count of robbery, one count of carjacking, one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. He is currently in the custody of the Hampton Sheriff's’s Office.

Demetrius Elijah Estes: 18-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 700 block of 25th Street. He has been arrested and charged with one count of robbery, one count of carjacking, one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. He is currently in the custody of the Hampton Sheriff's Office.

Police also charged two 15-year-old and two 17 year-old Newport News juveniles each with one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, one count of carjacking, one count of robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit a felony and one count of possession of firearm by a juvenile.
