NORFOLK -- A little girl walking with her mom home from a Head Start program in Norfolk was hit by a car Thursday afternoon.

Martieka Freeman says she and her 3-year-old daughter Najhai were in the crosswalk on East Olney Road around 12:20 p.m. when the car's side bumper hit her face.

"If he was driving any faster, she would have been killed," Freeman believes.

Najhai has scratches on her face, arms and legs.

"He was making a left turn and looking the other way. I think he was distracted or not paying attention," she conjectures

Ms. Freeman says the man stopped to see if the child was alright and then drove off.

She says she was in shock and worried about her child, so she's didn't pay close attention to the car, but she thinks it was a silver four-door Mercedes. She saw it turn left onto Church Street.

Najhai, who attends Calvert Square Head Start, was treated at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.

Police are looking for the driver of that car. Anyone who has information can call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
