NORTHAMPTON CO., VA- A teenager is in custody following a robbery and standoff in Northampton Co.
Northampton Co. Sheriff's deputies say the 15-year-old is suspected of robbing US Fuel Station on Rt. 13 around 3:30 a.m.
Owner Lal Singh says the teen came inside five minutes before the robbery. He walked the aisles and then left, returning with a shotgun to rob the store.
Singh says the robber got $698.00 and a couple of Gatorade drinks. He described the gunman as "very confident."
They say a deputy spotted the suspect, who was a teen runaway from Delaware, just a few minutes later and tried to stop him. That's when he reportedly drove through the toll plaza of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, turned around and started going northbound on Rt. 13. He crashed just before 4:00 a.m. around 3:58 a.m. but stayed in the vehicle, often pointing a gun at deputies, officials stated.
A county deputy and a Va. State Trooper fired at him but missed, authorities said.
The suspect, whose name hasn't been released, finally surrendered at 6:30 a.m. He is charged with felony eluding police, robbery and use of a firearm while committing robbery.
For a couple of hours Tuesday, Rt. 13 near the tunnel was closed and a detour was in place. At 10:00 a.m., northbound lanes were still closed and a detour was in place.
The Va. State Police tactical team and State Police K-9 units were also involved in the incident.
