VA. BEACH- Wake County Schools in Raleigh, N.C. named Va. Beach Schools Superintendent, Dr. James Merrill, as its new superintendent Tuesday night.
Merrill, Va. Beach's school superintendent since 2006, was one of three candidates for the top job. The other candidates were Dr. Dana Bedden of Irving, Texas and Ann Clark from Charlotte.
Merrill spoke to the Wake County school board Tuesday evening after the announcement was made.
In a news release Tuesday, Merrill it was a bittersweet time for him.
"I am proud to have been part of the development of our strategic plan, Compass to 2015, and the outstanding work that teachers, administrators and support staff are doing here in Virginia Beach to create meaningful, relevant learning experiences for children. However, I am excited about the new opportunities that await me in Wake County."
Wake has been looking for a new superintendent since the board fired Tony Tata in September 2012.
Merrill starts his new job on August 1 and he'll be paid $275,000 a year on a contract that runs through June 2017.
Deputy Superintendant Shiela Magula will serve in the interim while a national search is underway for Merrill's replacement.
That search will be done by Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, an Illinois-based firm, School Board members stated.
