VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Beach police have arrested a man for animal cruelty in the death of a puppy.
Police say Michael Carlos Ortega, 27, has been charged with felony animal cruelty and released on bond.
The investigation began when a citizen brought their deceased puppy to the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center on Saturday morning. Police say an Animal Control Officer spoke with the owner and opened the investigation into possible animal cruelty. A veterinarian at the shelter found the puppy died from "severe blunt force trauma."
Police have not released specific details as to what led them to Ortega.
The case remains under investigation.
